40 Years of Supporting the Federal Family

byAlyssa Belskis/April 10, 2026
40 years of supporting the federal family

Four Decades of Service

In 2026, FEEA celebrates 40 years of supporting federal employees and their families. Since our founding in 1986, FEEA has been driven by a simple but powerful belief: the people who dedicate their careers to serving the public deserve support when they need it most. Over the past four decades, we have worked alongside the federal community to provide emergency financial relief, educational opportunities, and programs that strengthen the bonds of the federal family. What began as a small effort fueled by compassion and community has grown into a national nonprofit serving federal and postal employees across the country and around the world.

How FEEA Began

FEEA was created in response to a clear need within the federal workforce. Even those who dedicate their lives to public service can face unexpected hardships, such as natural disasters, family emergencies, or sudden financial challenges.

In 1986, leaders within the federal community came together to create an organization dedicated to helping their colleagues in times of need. Their vision was to build a nonprofit safety net for federal employees, one powered by the generosity of fellow public servants and supporters.

From the very beginning, FEEA’s mission focused on two core goals:

  • Helping federal employees recover from hardship
  • Supporting the educational goals of federal families

That mission continues to guide our work today.

Growing Our Impact

Over the past 40 years, FEEA has expanded its work to support the federal community in ways that go beyond emergency relief. Today, our programs are built around three key pillars: financial resiliency, education, and information, all designed to help federal employees and their families navigate challenges and build a stronger future.

Financial Resiliency
Financial hardship can happen to anyone. Through our financial resiliency programs, FEEA provides resources and assistance that help federal employees stabilize during difficult times and recover when unexpected events occur.

Educational Opportunities
Education has always been central to FEEA’s mission. By supporting the educational goals of federal families, we help open doors for the next generation. Our programs recognize academic achievement, leadership, and the spirit of service that runs through the federal community.

Informational Resources
In addition to direct assistance, FEEA works to equip federal employees with information and resources that help them plan for the future, navigate challenges, and connect with available support systems.

Together, these initiatives allow FEEA to address both immediate needs and long-term opportunities for federal families.

The People Behind the Mission

FEEA’s work is only possible because of the community that surrounds it. For 40 years, federal employees, retirees, donors, volunteers, and partner organizations have come together to ensure help is available when it’s needed most. In many cases, individuals who once received assistance from FEEA later return as supporters themselves in donating, volunteering, or spreading the word about our programs. This cycle of support is what makes FEEA unique, providing a community built by the federal workforce.

The Next 40 Years

As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we are also looking ahead. The challenges facing federal employees continue to evolve. Rising costs, natural disasters, and unexpected hardships remain realities for many families. At the same time, access to education remains one of the most powerful ways to create opportunity for the next generation. FEEA remains committed to meeting these needs, expanding our programs, and ensuring that federal employees and their families always have a place to turn.

Join the Celebration: The 2026 Feds in Motion Challenge

One of the best ways to celebrate FEEA’s 40th anniversary, and to help power our future, is by participating in the 2026 Feds in Motion Challenge. The Challenge is a nationwide virtual fitness event that encourages federal employees, their families, and supporters to get active while supporting FEEA’s mission! Participants can walk, run, bike, or move in any way that fits their lifestyle while helping raise funds for FEEA’s programs. Every registration helps support the work of FEEA, from assistance for employees facing hardship to programs that support the education and wellbeing of federal families.

As we celebrate 40 years of service, the Feds in Motion Challenge is more than just a fitness event. It’s an opportunity for the federal community to come together, stay healthy, and ensure that FEEA can continue supporting federal employees for the next 40 years and beyond.

Join us, get moving, and be part of FEEA’s future to help keep the spirit of federal community strong! Register by April 8th for a guaranteed t-shirt: https://runsignup.com/fedsinmotionchallenge
