Back-to-School Success: 5 Essential Strategies for Students and Parents

Back-to-School Strategies for a Calmer, More Productive Year

The back-to-school season is upon us, bringing a whirlwind of emotions – excitement, anticipation, and perhaps a touch of anxiety. Whether your child is starting kindergarten or embarking on their college journey, setting the stage for a successful year and academic success involves more than just buying new school supplies. It’s about nurturing both academic achievements and mental well-being.

As a former educator, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative power of a balanced and supportive approach to learning. Here are 5 essential strategies to help you and your child navigate the new school year with confidence and create a positive, fulfilling experience.

  • Establish Routines and Structure

Think of routines as the scaffolding that supports a sturdy building. They provide a sense of stability and predictability, helping students feel grounded and prepared. Work with your child to create consistent sleep schedules, mealtimes, study periods, and even downtime.

    • Bedtime Bliss: Ensure your child gets enough sleep by establishing a consistent bedtime and a calming pre-sleep routine. Pack backpacks, review the next day’s schedule, and wind down with a book, and soft music.
    • Mornings Made Easy: A smooth morning sets a positive tone for the entire day. Help your child craft a morning routine that includes a nutritious breakfast and time to gather their belongings without rushing.
    • Study Sanctuary: Designate a quiet, well-lit study space free from distractions like TVs and cell phones. Having all necessary supplies readily available helps maintain focus and minimizes frustration. One helpful tip is to have your child place their cell phone in an area like the kitchen during homework time with notifications set to silent.
    • Brain Breaks: Encourage your child to take short breaks during study sessions to recharge and refocus. A quick walk, a healthy snack, or even a few minutes of stretching can do wonders for concentration.
  • Prioritize Mental Wellness and Emotional Well-being

Remember, academic success is intrinsically linked to mental wellness and emotional health. Encourage your child to prioritize self-care, engage in activities they enjoy, and express their feelings openly.

    • Open and Honest Communication: Create a safe and judgment-free space where your child feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. Let them know it’s perfectly normal to experience stress or anxiety, and reassure them of your unwavering support.
    • Stress-Busting Toolkit: Equip your child with healthy stress management techniques like deep breathing, mindfulness, or exercise. Help them identify their personal stress signals and develop coping mechanisms that work for them.
    • Make Time for Fun: Amidst the hustle and bustle of school, ensure your child has ample time for activities they truly enjoy. Whether it’s sports, hobbies, spending time with friends, or simply relaxing, these moments of joy are crucial for overall well-being.
  • Foster Open Communication

Think of communication as a bridge connecting you and your child. Keep those lines open by checking in regularly about their school experience, actively listening to their thoughts and feelings, and offering unwavering support and encouragement. This builds trust and allows you to address any challenges proactively.

    • Active Listening is Key: When your child speaks, give them your undivided attention. Put away distractions, make eye contact, and reflect back what you hear them saying to show you truly understand.
    • Cultivate a Judgment-Free Zone: Let your child know they can share anything with you without fear of judgment or criticism. This fosters an environment of trust and encourages open communication.
    • Schedule Regular Check-ins: Whether it’s a quick chat after school or a dedicated family meeting, create regular opportunities for meaningful conversations about your child’s school life, friendships, and any concerns they might have.
  • Set Realistic Goals and Celebrate Progress

Goal-setting is like charting a course for success. Help your child set achievable academic goals and break down larger tasks into smaller, manageable steps. Celebrate their progress along the way, no matter how small. This positive reinforcement fuels their confidence and motivation.

    • SMART Goals are the Way to Go: Guide your child in setting SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. This framework helps them stay focused and motivated.
    • Track Progress, Not Just Perfection: Help your child track their progress towards their goals using a planner, calendar, or app. Celebrate milestones and acknowledge their efforts, even if they encounter setbacks along the way.
    • Positive Reinforcement Works Wonders: Recognize and celebrate your child’s accomplishments, both big and small. A simple word of praise, a high-five, or a fun family activity can go a long way in boosting their confidence and enthusiasm.
  • Utilize Available Resources

Remember, you’re not alone in this journey! Many schools and communities offer a wealth of student and parent resources to support student success. Tap into tutoring programs, after-school activities, counseling services, and more. For eligible federal families, FEEA also offers free online tutoring through Tutor.com, providing additional academic support.

    • School Support Systems: Familiarize yourself with the resources available at your child’s school. Connect with teachers, counselors, and academic advisors to create a support network for your child.
    • Community Connections: Explore after-school programs, libraries, and community centers that offer enriching educational and recreational opportunities.
    • FEEA’s Helping Hand: If eligible, take advantage of FEEA’s free online tutoring program to supplement your child’s learning and address any knowledge gaps.

A successful school year is a holistic endeavor. By prioritizing your child’s academic and mental well-being, fostering open communication, and utilizing available resources, you can lay the foundation for a fulfilling and enriching educational experience.

At FEEA, we’re dedicated to providing student support and empowering federal families throughout their educational journeys. We believe in every child’s potential to thrive, and we’re here to help you make that happen.
