Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A Life Dedicated to Equality and Justice

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an iconic figure in the struggle for civil rights, embodied the virtues of equality, justice, and non-violent activism. Born on January 15, 1929, Dr. King’s life was a testament to the power of perseverance and unwavering commitment to the fight against racial injustice and segregation. His eloquent speeches and peaceful protests marked a turning point in American history, shaping the future of civil rights in the United States.

The Dream that Changed a Nation

Dr. King’s most famous address, the “I Have a Dream” speech, delivered during the March on Washington in 1963, remains a symbol of hope and change. His dream of a society where people are not judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character continues to inspire generations. Dr. King’s efforts played a pivotal role in the passage of landmark legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

A Legacy of Service and Community Empowerment

Dr. King’s philosophy went beyond civil rights; he advocated for a broader spectrum of social change, including economic equality and international peace. He understood that true equality involves uplifting entire communities through education, empowerment, and service. His commitment to service is exemplified in his famous quote, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'”

MLK Day of Service: Continuing the Journey of Change

In honor of Dr. King’s legacy, the MLK Day of Service, held annually around his birthday, encourages individuals across the nation to engage in community service. This period of volunteerism, spanning from mid-March to early April, provides an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King’s teachings and contribute to community-building initiatives, a fitting tribute to a man who gave his life to the service of others.

FEEA’s Role in Service to Feds

FEEA’s commitment to serving civilian federal and postal workers is in the spirit of Dr. King’s call to uplift entire communities through education, empowerment, and service. Our #FedsHelpingFeds Mission does just through our Emergency Hardship Loans, Disaster Relief Grants, Merit Scholarships, and Free Online Tutoring; serving the federal civilian community.

FEEA extends the opportunity to join our Scholarship Selection Committee. Members of our virtual scholarship selection committee make a difference for federal families by assisting us in the evaluation of nearly 3,000 college scholarship applications from the best and brightest students across the U.S.

Each year, over 300 volunteers from a variety of academic and professional backgrounds help us review, score, and rank our applicants. Between mid-March and early April, volunteers commit between 10 – 15 hours to review and score 30-40 applications online.
