The Commerce Employees Fund was established in 1996, following the crash of Secretary Ron Brown's plane in Croatia. Since that time, the Fund has assisted numerous Commerce employees facing natural disasters or personal hardships. The Fund has also assisted the families of several deceased employees, including two who perished on September 11, 2001. Most recently, in the wake of the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, the Commerce Employees Fund aided Commerce Department employees in the affected areas.
