The Moment Everything Changed

zachcutoutThe Green family attended church nearly every Sunday during their posting to the U.S. embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan.

 

One spring day, as they were listening to the testimonies of their fellow church-goers, a man stood up at the back of the church. Normally, people spoke in English, but this man spoke in Arabic, sweating violently. Suddenly, there was a deafening noise.

 

Says Zach Green, who was eleven-years-old at the time, "You couldn't see anything. You couldn't hear anything. People were throwing grenades everywhere. It sounded like a million fireworks going off in a closed area."

 

Zach's mother, Barbara Green, leapt on top of her child, holding him safe beneath her body. Then, she pulled him to his feet and told him to run as fast as he could towards the light at the back of the church.

 

It’s the last memory Zach has of his mother who perished that day with her daughter Kristen Wormsley.
